Privacy Policy

Ontariole is a free daily geography game about Ontario, Canada. This policy explains, in plain language, what information the game handles, why, and the choices you have. Last updated: November 4, 2026.

Who we are and how to reach us

Ontariole is operated from Ontario, Canada. For any privacy question or request, email j14sinclair@hotmail.com.

What we collect, and why

  • If you create an account. Your email address and the name you provide are handled by the Base44 platform that hosts Ontariole, including sign-in providers such as Google. Ontariole never sees or stores your password.
  • If you submit a daily score. The display name and optional home city you enter, the date, your total score, and the distances of your five guesses are stored in our database and shown publicly on the leaderboard.
  • A device key. A random ID created in your browser. A one-way SHA-256 hash of it is sent to the server so each player gets one scored attempt per day. The hash cannot be turned back into your ID.
  • Technical data. Like nearly every website, the servers hosting Ontariole receive your IP address and standard request details in order to deliver pages and keep the service secure.

What stays in your browser

Your streaks, game history, practice statistics, played regions and landmarks, chosen practice difficulty, saved display name and home city, device key, and sign-in session all live in your browser's local storage. They are not uploaded anywhere on their own, and clearing your browser storage removes them for good.

How we use information

  • To run the game, your history, and the public daily leaderboard.
  • To keep the daily puzzle to one scored attempt per player.
  • To balance location difficulty using anonymous, aggregated performance numbers — no individual player is ever identified in them.
  • To respond when you contact us.

We never sell your information, and we do not run advertising or social-media tracking tags on Ontariole.

Analytics and your choice

Anonymous usage analytics are collected only if you accept them in the privacy banner, and you can change your choice at any time using "Cookie settings" in the footer. Declining changes nothing about gameplay. If we ever add advertising, we will update this policy and ask again before enabling it.

Third parties, and where information is processed

Ontariole runs on the Base44 platform, which hosts the app, its database, accounts, and sign-in. These providers may process information outside Canada; Ontariole remains responsible for it under Canada's privacy law and holds its providers to comparable protections. Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap, which uses no accounts, no cookies, and no API keys, and receives your IP address only to send map images to your browser. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts.

How long we keep information

Account details and daily results are kept while the game operates, because the leaderboard and your game history depend on them. Information stored only in your browser is kept until you clear it. We delete any stored information you ask us to delete.

Your rights

Under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, you can ask to see your information, have it corrected, or have it deleted. Email j14sinclair@hotmail.com and we will respond within 30 days, as that law requires for requests to access, correct, or delete your information. To close your account, contact us and we will remove your account details and any leaderboard entries we hold for you.

Children

Ontariole is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Parents who believe a child under 13 has submitted information can email us and we will delete it. Display names on the public leaderboard should never contain real names, school names, or other identifying details, and we remove entries that break this.

Security and breaches

Ontariole runs on a platform with managed security, and device keys are stored only as one-way hashes. If a security breach ever creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify the people affected and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, as Canadian law requires.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated date above changes with it, and significant changes are announced on this page. Questions? Email j14sinclair@hotmail.com.
